Jim Campbell

Jim Campbell joined Capital One, a Fortune 200 company headquartered in McLean, Virginia, from the Advisory Board Company, in 1998. Capital One is a diversified financial services company with more than 50 million customer accounts worldwide, and more than 720 bank locations in Texas, Louisiana, and the New York metro area. Capital One's subsidiaries offer a broad spectrum of financial products and services to consumers, small businesses and commercial clients and collectively had $87.7 billion in deposits and $142.0 billion in managed loans outstanding as of March 31, 2007. As the CFO of Capital One’s US Card business, Mr. Campbell has wide ranging responsibilities in relation to the financial performance of the consumer credit focused US Card business. Mr. Campbell serves on the company’s Asset-Liability Management Committee and on the executive leadership teams of the US Card business and the Global Finance organization. He also serves on the board of the company’s charitable foundation, the Capital One Foundation, and is the Audit Committee Chair. Mr. Campbell draws on 20+ years of experience in corporate and line finance and in new business development. Prior to serving as the CFO of US Card, Mr. Campbell was the Finance lead for various businesses including the company’s international division, and served as the head of Business Line Planning early in his tenure with the company. In his previous experience, Mr. Campbell was Managing Director of Finance for the Executive Board Company in Washington, DC, prior to its IPO. Prior to that, he worked in Corporate Finance and New Business Development for BAT Industries, plc, a large British multinational. In his time there he established joint ventures in Europe, Africa and the former Soviet Union. He began his career with the LEK Partnership, a strategy consultancy in London, England. As a leader in his local community, Mr. Campbell has served as the President of Scottsville Recreation Inc, and the Treasurer of Scottsville Organization for Kid’s Sports and has coached soccer for many years. Mr. Campbell holds a Master’s degree from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, where he was a McEuen scholar and an MBA from Georgetown University in Washington, DC.


Mary Driscoll
President and Editorial Director, CFO Conferences and CFO Research Services

Mary Driscoll runs CFO Conferences and CFO Research Services, the executive education and research services arm of CFO Publishing Corp. The latter, a division of the Economist Group, produces CFO magazine, the information source for senior financial executives. CFO is a monthly magazine with separate editions in the US, Europe, and Asia. Ms. Driscoll has served in various positions within the Economist Group for seventeen years. From 1990 to 1996, she was a senior editor of CFO magazine. In that capacity, she developed numerous cover stories on strategy, corporate finance, performance management, and organizational change. During 1997, Ms. Driscoll was Editor of the non-affiliated CFO magazine in Australia during its inaugural year. Ms. Driscoll has written several business books, including Cash Management: Corporate Strategies for Profit (John Wiley & Sons). She has won several awards for investigative journalism in the area of finance. Ms. Driscoll received a BA (honors) in English from the University of Massachusetts and studied accounting and management at Harvard University.


Jonathan Hornby
Director, Worldwide Marketing — Performance Management, SAS

Jonathan Hornby is a Director in Worldwide Marketing for Performance Management at SAS. He is a visionary and thought leader in the field of performance management and currently leads the global marketing direction. His experience comes from a hands-on background within the UK banking sector, followed by extensive travel, dialogue and collaboration with customers, management consultants and respected thought leaders in academia across the world. Hornby led the design and introduction of SAS® Strategic Performance Management – a solution that supports the balanced scorecard – and was responsible for the acquisition of ABC Technologies in 2002 for improved profitability analysis. Between 2005 and 2007, he led both strategy and product management of SAS’ risk solutions, which enabled a deeper understanding of how behavior, culture and communication influences strategic outcomes. He joined SAS in 1996, bringing 15 years of business experience from the banking sector, including activity-based management, process re-engineering, performance analysis and marketing. Hornby is a regular speaker at international conferences and delivers lectures on performance management at the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University.

Bob Iversen
VP, George Group- now a part of Accenture

Bob Iversen is Vice President, Client Services at George Group, responsible for the Strategy to Execution practice where he leads cross functional engagement teams in strategic diagnostic assessments to identify key value levers in asset utilization and lean transformation. Bob has over 10 years of operations consulting experience with McKinsey & Co and Growth Consulting where he applied operations excellence in numerous industries including: Mining, Pulp and Paper, Refining, Automotive, Pharmaceuticals and Food and Beverage. His consulting experience includes an emphasis on lean transformations focusing on helping clients develop strategies to improve operations, reduce inventory and lead times, improve ROIC and key customer metrics and sustain the gains from these improvements.

Before entering the consulting field, Bob managed a $28MM business unit in the manufacture of fiber optic cable for Alcatel N.A. He began his professional career as a Logistics officer in the US Marine Corps where he ensured all facets of logistics including Maintenance, Transportation, Food Services and Ammunition support were effectively coordinated for an 800 man infantry battalion in training and combat.

Bob received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Auburn University.


Warren Jenson

Warren Jenson, Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Administrative Officer: Mr. Jenson joined Electronic Arts in July 2002 as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial and Administrative Officer. Prior to joining EA Mr. Jenson served as senior vice president and CFO at Amazon.com. Prior to joining Amazon.com, Mr. Jenson was the CFO and executive vice president for Delta Airlines. He also has served as CFO and senior vice president for the National Broadcasting Company (NBC). Warren earned his Master of Accountancy-Business Taxation and BS in Accounting from Brigham Young University.


Robert Kaplan
Co-Developer of the Balanced Scorecard; Baker Foundation Professor, Harvard Business School

Few people have contributed as significantly to the art and especially the science of business strategy as Robert Kaplan. His Balanced Scorecard is the premier tool for aligning a company’s current actions with its strategic goals. This performance management system helps business leaders clarify their corporate vision and align people, business units, and resources with a unified strategy. In his research and writing, speaking and consulting, Robert develops ways to link cost and performance management systems to strategy implementation and operational excellence. Robert and coauthor David Norton have written four landmark books on TBS, describing how it works and outlining best practices for its implementation. Together, these books have transformed the business strategy landscape and made Robert Kaplan one of the most valuable speakers in the fields of business strategy and leadership. Dr. Kaplan also co-developed Activity-Based Costing, a revolutionary approach to determining the underlying economics of a business, which he describes in his book Cost & Effect. Robert Kaplan is Baker Foundation Professor at Harvard Business School and a former Dean of the Graduate School of Industrial Administration, Carnegie-Mellon University.


Brett Knowles
Founder, PM2 – Performance Measurement & Management

With twenty years in the Performance Measurement space Brett Knowles has worked extensively in the area of scorecards. In the late 80’s Mr. Knowles was involved in the initial scorecard research with Drs. Norton and Kaplan at Harvard University. He later became Co-Founder of the first Balance Scorecard application – pb views - in 1992. From 2000 – 2001 Mr. Knowles became VP and Executive of the Balanced Scorecard Collaborative working again with Drs. Kaplan and Norton. Mr. Knowles has had the privilege to have worked with three clients who have won “Balance Scorecard Hall of Fame Winner” from Drs. Kaplan and Norton for Balanced Scorecard Leadership (AT&T; Skandia; Stockholm; Cognos Corporation). His clients have been profiled in Drs. Kaplan and Norton’s latest three best selling books – Strategy Focused Organization published in 2000, and in 2004 Strategy Mapping and in 2006 Alignment, as well as their “Best-of-the-Best” publication on scorecards and through their on-line BSCol.com case studies. Dr. Kaplan has done research on Mr. Knowles clients and has profiled their success in his papers in Harvard Business Review, Harvard Business Scholl Cases, Fortune Magazine and Forbes Magazine. Robert Kugel
SVP and Research Director , Ventana Research

As head of Financial Performance Management (FPM) practice, Rob focuses on the intersection of information technology and the finance organization. The FPM research agenda includes the application of IT to financial process optimization and collaborative systems; adaptive control and analytics; and advanced budgeting and planning. Rob has been a technology analyst for over 20 years. He was an Institutional Investor All-American Team member and on the Wall Street Journal All-Star list. Rob worked at First Albany Corporation, First Boston, Morgan Stanley and McKinsey. Rob earned his BA in Economics/Finance at Hampshire College, an MBA in Finance/Accounting at Columbia University, and is a CFA charter holder.


Scott Leibs

Scott Leibs is a deputy editor at CFO where he oversees the Topline and InTech sections and handles a wide range of other writing and editing duties. Leibs has covered IT issues in-depth for CFO for the past eight years, having served as Technology Editor and, for three years, as Editor of a quarterly supplement devoted to IT issues. In 2002 he won a National Gold Award from the American Society of Business Press Editors for his TechWatch column. A former editor at Fidelity Investments and at InformationWeek magazine, Leibs has also written about books, music, education, environmental issues, and many other topics for a wide range of publications. Scott McLean

Scott Mclean has a 10 year background in the accounting industry followed further by 10 years in the application software market. A Bachelor of Business graduate of Kuring-gai College in Australia, Scott articled with PricewaterhouseCoopers and following that obtained his CPA qualification. Scott then worked with several significant corporations including ICI Explosives (Orica) and Energy Australia and Ernst & Young Consulting (now Capgemini).

Transitioning into the software market, Scott joined Systems Union, now known as Infor Global Solutions. Over the past 10 years Scott has brought a combination of accounting and IT experience to deliver financial accounting and performance management solutions to many industries including hi-tech, financial services, not-for-profit, government & shipping.

Scott resides in Orange County California with his wife & 3 children where, as part of the SunSystems financial accounting group, he manages the west coast region for Infor Global Solutions.


Lisa Metcalfe

Lisa Metcalfe is a Regional Practice Leader for Tatum LLC and an 19-year technology industry veteran. Ms. Metcalfe has served in technology and operational leadership positions in a variety of work environments including the profit, non-profit and political sectors. Prior to being named Regional Practice Leader, Ms. Metcalfe used her extensive CIO background to accelerate companies through transition as a Tatum Partner. Ms Metcalfe speaks on topics surrounding the business and technology ramifications of corporate directional change. On behalf of Tatum, she writes a monthly column for Inc. Debra Morris
Partner, Tatum, LLC

Debra Morris, a partner in the Orange County practice of Tatum, LLC, has over 25 years of demonstrated financial leadership in private, public, national and multi-national companies. She specializes in raising capital, creating strong alignment between finance, IT and operations, and assembling teams and building infrastructure and operating systems to support rapid business expansion, including selecting, designing and implementing “best in class” accounting and business performance management (BPM) systems and processes. As Chief Financial Officer of several rapid-growth healthcare and services industry companies, she built teams, infrastructure, systems and processes to support rapid growth and implemented clear and discernable budgeting processes that shifted accountability from finance to operating managers. Morris selected and implemented BPM solutions to replace manually intensive, substandard financial and operating reporting, delivering meaningful insight and business measurements to operating and executive management and the Board of Directors. She currently sits on the Board of Directors for Tatum, LLC.


Jeffery Nemy
Chief Financial Officer, Northern California Public Broadcasting Inc.

Jeff Nemy, a 25-year veteran of financial management specializing in broadcast, advertising and consulting, joined Northern California Public Broadcasting, Inc (NCPB) in 2006. NCPB is the parent company of several public broadcasting television and radio stations, including KQED in San Francisco. Mr. Nemy supervises NCPB’s finance and information technology departments and manages all financial affairs. He works with the development of NCPB’s strategic and business plans relating to financial management, as well as providing counsel on fiscal matters for the organization. Prior to joining NCPB, Mr. Nemy was a Senior Vice President, Regional Finance Director within The Interpublic Group of Companies, (IPG) for nearly a decade. Within that capacity, he was Chief Financial Officer of Foote, Cone & Belding’s San Francisco office which, at that time, was the largest advertising agency on the West Coast. In addition to IPG, Mr. Nemy held senior financial management positions at Nextel Communications and Chronicle Broadcasting, the parent company of several ABC and NBC affiliates, including KRON-TV in San Francisco. He began his career as a management consultant, working with both Arthur Young and Price Waterhouse. Mr. Nemy holds a CPA and an MBA from the University of Santa Clara. He received a Bachelors Degree in both Economics and Finance from California State University, Chico. Mr. Nemy also was a contributing author to the recent Wiley & Sons book entitled “The Professional Services Firm Bible”, responsible for writing on finance, accounting, and human resource issues.


Mark Nittler

Mark Nittler brings Workday more than 20 years of broad experience in key financial application disciplines such as accounting, ERP, procurement, contract management, compliance, and security. Mark’s experience includes executive leadership positions in both product strategy and marketing, including vice president, Application Strategy for PeopleSoft, vice president of Strategic Marketing for Commerce One, and vice president of Strategic Marketing for Symantec. Rick Seaman
Assistant VP for Finance, University of Virginia

Rick Seaman is currently serving the University of Virginia as Senior Technology Advisor to the Assistant Vice President for Finance and University Comptroller. Prior to accepting this position in 2007, Rick was Director of Financial Information Services in the Comptroller’s Office. In this position, he is responsible for seeking out and implementing innovative technology solutions designed to increase overall productivity and deliver responsive information services to both financial administration staff and users across the University. Rick holds a Bachelors degree in Industrial Psychology from Lehigh University, a Masters degree in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia, and has earned the Certified Computing Professional (CCP) designation from the Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals (ICCP). He also serves on the Certification Council of the ICCP. Rick has over 40 years experience in systems development and information technology in higher education.


Lawrence Serven

Lawrence Serven was featured in The New York Times (At Lunch With: Lawrence B. Serven, Sunday May 5, 2002) as a founder and Principal of The Buttonwood Group LLP, a research and consulting firm specializing in performance management and organizational effectiveness. Lawrence's work in designing and implementing planning solutions has been profiled in The Harvard Business Review, CFO Magazine, Financial Executive, The Harvard Management Update and other leading publications. LCDR Joseph Staier
Program Manager for Coast Guard Business Intelligence Systems (formerly the Readiness Management System), U.S. Coast Guard

LCDR Joseph Staier graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1992 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Upon graduation, he served on board two Coast Guard Cutters, USCGC EAGLE and USCGC TAHOMA. After leaving the fleet and receiving Master of Science degrees in Information Technology and Management, his first big engineering project was in charge of software development at the Command and Control Engineering Center for Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) project. Following a two-year stint as the Aide de Camp for the Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard, LCDR Staier went to the US Coast Guard Academy as an Assistant Professor of Computer and Electrical Engineering and the Assistant Dean. While there, he helped coach the women’s Pistol team to their first national title. Since 2006, LCDR Staier has been immersed in the world of Business Intelligence as the Program Manager for the Coast Guard’s Business Intelligence system, CGBI. Hailing from the mountains of North Carolina, he currently lives in Northern Virginia with his wife Katie, and his two daughters, Kellianna and Kyra.


Tim Stanley
SVP Innovation and Gaming Technology and CIO, Harrah’s Entertainment

Tim Stanley is Senior Vice President of Innovation, Gaming, & Technology and Chief Information Officer of Harrah’s Entertainment, Inc. He is responsible for the strategy, architecture, program management, development, support and operations of the entire portfolio of Harrah’s gaming and IT-enabled business capabilities in the US and abroad, as well as the identification and enablement of new business & IT innovation within the company. Additionally, he is responsible for the product marketing, revenue management, and development of the company’s slot, table-game, and non-gaming operations. In this role, he oversees approximately 1,000 gaming & IT professionals worldwide. Before joining Harrah’s in 2001, Stanley was a partner with consulting firms USWeb and marchFIRST, where he developed and led the travel practice for the firms, working with several leading airline, hospitality, travel and gaming clients. Prior to that role, he was the CIO of National Airlines, where he launched the company on an innovative platform of Internet-based IT applications, infrastructure and operations. He has also held various leadership positions in the U.S. and overseas in the areas of IT, marketing, operations and consulting with Intel Corporation, Optima/KPMG, InnovaTech and Kimberly-Clark Corporation. Stanley began his career as a U.S. Air Force officer, responsible for advanced missile guidance system technology projects and some of the original Global Positioning System (GPS) integration efforts. Stanley was named one of InfoWorld’s “Top 25 CTOs,” and he has been honored with CIO Insight’s “Partners in Alignment” award for successful linkage of business strategy and technology at Harrah’s. He has led Harrah’s IT to a number of awards ranging from the CIO 100 award; to Computerworld’s Best Places to Work in IT for an unprecedented Top 25 ranking for the past 8 years; to the American Business Awards Best MIS & IT Organization. He holds graduate degrees in International Business and Technology Management from Thunderbird (AGSIM) and Arizona State University, as well as a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Washington.


G. Bennett Stewart, III
Co-Founder, Stern Stewart & Co; CEO, EVA Dimensions LLC

Bennett Stewart pioneered the development of Stern Stewart’s trademarked EVA (economic value added) framework for value-based management and incentive compensation, and is the author of The Quest for Value (HarperBusiness, 1991), the definitive EVA text. Mr. Stewart is also the author of “How to Fix Accounting – Measure and Reward Economic Profit” (the Journal of Applied Corporate Finance, Spring 2003), which was the basis for a Wall Street Journal editorial appearing June 2, 2003 (“Why Smart Managers Do Dumb Things”). Mr. Stewart has published three articles in the Harvard Business Review: “Remaking the Public Corporation from Within” (July-August, 1990), “Pension Roulette” (June, 2003), and “Champions of Profitable Growth” (July-August 2004). His recent articles on incentive compensation include “Options for Options” (CEO, September 2003), “Where Jeff Immelt’s New Incentive Plan Misses the Mark” (Corporate Board Member, March/April 2004), “It’s the Metrics that Matter” (Directorship, October 2004), and “The Real Reasons Enron Failed” (Directorship, March 2006, and forthcoming, The Morgan Stanley Journal of Applied Corporate Finance). Stewart spearheaded the development of the Shareowner Alignment Index (SAI) survey of the best practices in internal corporate governance and value-based management in association with Hackett Benchmarking. First launched in mid 2001, SAI was covered by Fortune Executive Editor, Geoffrey Colvin, in an article entitled “Earnings Aren’t Everything” (September 17, 2001). Mr. Stewart is also the principal architect of PRVit (the performance-risk-valuation investment technology), a new (2005), quantitative, EVA-based model for fundamental stock valuation and corporate performance benchmarking. Stewart acquired PRVit and the EVA analytics business from Stern Stewart in March 2006 through a new company, EVA Dimensions LLC, which he now oversees as CEO (while retaining the role of a senior representative of Stern Stewart). Mr. Stewart is a graduate of Princeton University (BSE, 1974) and the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business (MBA, 1976). He currently serves as Chairman of the Alumni Advisory Council for Princeton University’s Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering.


Dan Thorpe
SVP and Director of Statistics and Modeling, Insight and Innovation, Wachovia

Daniel Thorpe, Ph.D., is a Senior Vice President at Wachovia and currently serves as Director of the Statistics and Modeling team for the company’s Marketing Insight and Innovation group. Thorpe’s team and his Insight colleagues are a recognized Center of Excellence that offers rigorous analytical and marketing research support to develop strategies to acquire, enhance and deepen, and retain customer relationships for Wachovia. Thorpe has a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, and a master’s and doctorate in statistics, all from the University of Minnesota, where his research and focus were in industrial statistics (design of experiments) and inference in small sample sizes. Upon finishing his Ph.D., he took a job with W.L. Gore and Associates, where his areas of contribution varied across experimental design in product development, survey design and analysis in employee engagement, and in the financial modeling and forecasting of product demand. During this time, he frequently gave presentations and papers on how the statistical community can more effectively partner and collaborate with its business peers. When he joined Wachovia, Thorpe’s focus turned entirely to generating customer insight from the huge amounts of data and information that Wachovia collects. He and his team partner with Wachovia’s lines of business in modeling customer behavior from targeted marketing campaigns to understand the value of customer loyalty. Currently, he leads Wachovia’s marketing ROI modeling efforts, where he partners with colleagues in the Marketing division.


Glenn Wegryn
Associate Director of Global Analytics, The Procter & Gamble Company

Glenn has been a leader, manager and business analyst at P&G for nearly 25 years. During that time he has held organizational leadership, project management, technology development, and analysis roles of increasing responsibility and impact to the Company. Most notably, he has built the Operations Research analysis practice at P&G into a world-class practitioner’s organization and is an acknowledged expert in methodologies used to create effective supply networks for P&G and its’ affiliates. He has led various optimization, simulation, and decision analyses in business strategy and in manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, transportation, and customer service sectors. Pete Winiarski, Principal in Operations Strategy at George Group, is an expert in methods to align and focus organizations to achieve their strategic goals. He is a professional change agent leader with extensive experience over the past 20 years in applying operations excellence as a strategic weapon. Pete has worked with industries across the board in insurance, pharmaceutical, electrical, automotive and waste management. Prior to George Group, Pete has served as Vice President of Operations at Gems Sensor and was an Engagement Manager / Operation Practice Leadership Team with McKinsey & Company.

Pete received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering with a Minor in Economics from University of Massachusetts and his Masters of Business Administration from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
