Keynote Address — The Green Partnership with Business: Being Green Doesn’t Mean a Bottom Line Awash in Red Ink
Fred Krupp, Author of Earth: The Sequel — The Race to Reinvent Energy and Stop Global Warming; President, Environmental Defense Fund
The hunt for tomorrow’s green energy sources is inspiring such brazen inventions as flying windmills and artificial carbon-eating trees. It means reinventing everything from cars to concrete, replacing the old dumb, centralized electrical grid with a smart, multidirectional energy network, even remaking the economics of the rainforest. But while these bold ideas are nearly ripe, without a strong economic incentive they won’t come to market at a speed and scale sufficient to beat the swift pace of global warming. Energy is the biggest business in the world, “the mother of all markets,” in Doerr’s words, which means that the winners in this race will not only save the planet but also make fortunes that will dwarf those made in computing, networks and software. Venture capitalists and companies like Google are jockeying to fund clean energy start-ups: in the third quarter of 2007, clean technology became the leading venture investment category in the United States, for the first time.
